Atal Bihari Vajpayee to be conferred with Bharat Ratna

The Modi-led Government has announced to confer country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and freedom fighter and Benaras Hindu University founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya on 24, Dec, 2014.

President Pranab Mukherjee announced about conferring the honour on AB Vajpayee. The President said,' Pleased to award Bharat Ratna to AB Vajpayee.'

Vajpayee, who led the first NDA Government as the 11th Prime Minister of India, first for 13 days in 1996 and then from 1998 to 2004, will be receiving the honour.

It was reported that a final decision to confer the award was reportedly taken at a meeting PM Modi held with top BJP leaders including Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah.

The BJP has been demanding the highest civilian award for Vajpayee for the last five years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also promised a Bharat Ratna for Pt Malaviya during the campaign for the Lok Sabha polls.
