Ghar Wapsi we should be really focused on

Does the Vishwa Hindu Parishad want Narendra Modi to be a one time Prime Minister ?

This is a question that has one exercised over the manner in which the public discourse has been hijacked away from 'Make in India', 'Digital India' and 'Swacch Bharat' to focus almost obsessively on 'Ghar Wapsi'. It perhaps was telling that the only headline to emerge out of the India Ideas Conclave as far as the mainstream media goes was the controversy concerning conversion rather than on any of the substantive discussions on Reforms,Spirituality as a Strategic Lever or on 'Ease of doing Business' or on New Politics.

Conversion politics has its merits especially within specific pockets of India where the social fabric within communities has been ruptured while foreign funded tele-evangelists have been on a Church planting spree. A counter socio-cultural movement  in these pockets of India in response to this consumer marketing style proselytism is inevitable.  But this has to be a targetted, apolitical counter movement that does neither distracts from the arduous task of Governance nor derails the critical mission of Economic Growth.

The first fully majority Center Right government in post Independence India needs to be laser focused on laying the foundation for a multi-decadal prosperity in India This requires a permanent electoral majority spanning multiple terms. This will not happen if we allow the dominant narrative to be hijacked by myopic 'Ghar Wapsi' politics that grabs headlines but achieves little else in expanding the electoral footprint.

There is however one 'Ghar Wapsi' agenda that is worthy of being taken up by the Hindu Civil Society on a priority basis that is both politically benign and will also have the ultimate effect of countering foreign funded proselytism with a formidable war chest.

The Karnataka government last week initiated legislation to take over Hindu Mutts. According to a report in the Times of India on the 20th of December:

The Congress government seems to be inviting trouble and wrath of the mutts and devotees by introducing a Bill to amend the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments legislation, which allows the government to take over mutts and temples, if they are in trouble.

The Karnataka move is neither extraordinary nor exceptional for even before Independence and for decades after Independence in state after state and Temple after Temple, Hindu Civil Society has actively sought Government Interference in Hindu Temples.

It must be asked why is the Trust Deficit within Hindu Civil Society so low that we rush to invite Government Control and Political Management of Hindu Temple Trusts unthinkingly ?

As has been documented on multiple earlier ocassions, Freeing Hindu Temples from Government Control has at best been a half-hearted agenda of the so called guardians of the Hindu cause with perhaps the lone exception of Dr. Subramanian Swamy who has been most vocal on this issue.

All the bravado over 'ghar wapsi' and bluster over changing Hindu demographics pale into subdued silence and excuses as the largest and richest of Hindu Temples like Tirupathi continue to be managed by Government and Politicians directly or by proxy.

So rather than expend energy over headline grabbing 'ghar wapsi' tactics how about taking the leap towards a Strategic 'Ghar Wapsi' that restores control of Hindu Temples to Hindu Civil Society ?

Freedom to Hindu Temples from Government and Political Control is as much about Minimum Government, Maximum Governance as would be Labor Reforms and Reforms for 'Ease of Doing Business'. With access to funds at the scale of the endowments of the richest Temple trusts the counter movement to proselytism can be sustained at a strategic level through Educational Institutions and Welfare Programs focused on multi-generational impact on families and communities at the lowest strata of Hindu Society leading ultimately to Prosperity and Wealth Creation for all.

Would it be too much to expect prioritizing the 'Ghar Wapsi' of Hindu Temples over everything else ?
