Modi Government to provide broadband to every village

Narendra Modi Government has promised to extend the broadband facility to every village. In the next three and a half years 750,000 kilometre of cable is proposed to be laid to provide broadband in every village of the country.

'Our Government is committed to expand the Information Technology to every village in the country. This project aims at digital empowerment of people of rural areas. This will be a game changer,' Union Minister for Communications & IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said addressing ‘MyGov Samvaad’ in New Delhi. ‘MyGov Samvaad’ honours the citizens for their
contribution to participative governance.

Interacting with the contributors of ideas for ‘Digital India’ project of MyGov, Prasad said, 'Once the project is operationalised, various certificates needed by the poor can be reached to them in their villages itself. Various other practical benefits will also be available to them through internet.'

The Minister felicitated 20 chosen contributors of ‘Digital India’ project of MyGov for their best ideas and suggestions from out of over 40,000 responses. Most of the contributors are in the age group of 20 to 30.

Prasad said India now has about 30 crore internet users and is crossing the number of internet users even in the US which is the second largest internet users in the world after China.

The Minister pointed out that there is a need to sensitise people about the power of technology.

Emphasising that electronic manufacturing is sought to be promoted in a big way, Prasad pointed out that while mobile connectivity in urban India is 146 per cent, it is only about 46 per cent in rural areas.

'Such an urban-rural divide is sought to be bridged,' he said.

MyGov is an internet-based platform for citizen engagement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 26.  The interactive platform establishes a link between citizens and Government. It solicits ideas, views and suggestions from citizens. The innovative platform allows people from all walks of life to participate in policy formulation and execution.
