Smriti Irani: Cleanliness drive should also include the mind

HRD Minister Smriti Irani today said the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' should not remain limited to the cleanliness of the environment but should also include the cleanliness of mind.

Irani also announced Wasima, a Class VI student from village Gunawat in Mewat, as the Brand Ambassador of Bal Swachhta Abhiyan for Haryana state.

Addressing a gathering at the concluding function of Bal Swachhta Mission organized at Mewat Model School Nuh today, Irani said the cleanliness drive was not a political programme, rather the children of the country should get a clean atmosphere and surroundings.

She appealed to the students to wash hands before meals and said they should also ask their elders to wash their hands.

The Union Minister released a CD of documentary on the cleanliness mission, which will be sent to schools in the state.

Smriti Irani also took Swacch Bharat to JNU last month.

JNU’s Cafetaria got a facelift when Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani visited the campus recently. The cafetaria that was in a bad shape with cobwebs all over and hygiene taking a backseat, got a Smriti Irani boost when she motivated the students and staff to clean it up. The staff who complained of poor ventilation and a smoky kitchen environment were in for a surprise when the HRD Minister at her expense got them three industrial fans. The Tefla canteen at JNU now has a clean look thanks to the Minister’s motivational gesture and the spirited participation of students and staff.

Smriti Irani’s surprise gift to the JNU Cafetaria comes at a time when Delhi is set to see yet another round of assembly polls. JNU which is seen as the citadel of Leftist Student Activism may perhaps have a change of mind what with the saffron winds blowing in its cafetaria. That students in a Left bastion have taken to Prime Minister Modi’s dream of Mission Clean India says a lot about which way the wind is blowing in JNU.

With Assembly election due in Delhi in some time, the importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan as a rallying force in the electoral sphere is becoming even more evident. When PM Modi inaugurated his cleanliness drive a month ago, the event caught the fancy of people not only in the national capital but also across the country. That it is becoming a unifying force among students as well should not come as a surprise to anyone.
