Gujarat and the Freedom to Vote

Gujarat Governor OP Kohli has finally given a nod to the long-pending Bill on compulsory voting in the State of Gujarat. Though this Bill is only for Local Body elections which are under the purview of the state election commission and not for the Assembly/Lok-Sabha Elections which are under Central Election Commission, it has raised a lot of eyebrows. The reason behind the disapproval of some people is that they believe it is in direct violation of the fundamental rights of a citizen, particularly the right to vote. Many others see voting as much as a duty as it is a right.

Niti Central, in conversation with Sandip Roy, Senior Editor, Firstpost discusses his opinion on the Bill and also some of the key features he pointed out in his story, like the introduction of NOTA (None Of The Above) option.
