BJP parliamentary board to discuss Cabinet rejig.

The BJP parliamentary board will meet to decide on the Cabinet expansion after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi today. This will also include the induction of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar as Defence Minister.

The reshuffle of PM Modi's Union Council of Ministers will take place at 1 pm on Sunday. This will be the first expansion and reshuffle of the Cabinet after he assumed charge in May this year.

Parrikar, who is expected to resign on Saturday when the next chief minister of the state is also likely to be announced, said he had been formally invited by Modi to join the Union Cabinet, and though he consented, it was a very difficult decision for him to take.

The Goa chief minister, who will take the Rajya Sabha route to join the Cabinet, said on Friday that he will contest the Upper House elections from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP won 71 seats in the general elections.

It has not been revealed who will replace Parrikar, but state Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed him.

Sources said that during the crucial meeting of BJP legislators, three names - Parsekar, Goa Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar and Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza - were shortlisted for the post.
