It is high time spending on health care sector was doubled.

A country’s development is measured with the yardstick of human development — mainly the access of its majority of population to quality education and healthcare facilities. With the Modi Government in power, there are high hopes from his first Budget for this sector.

As far as the healthcare sector is concerned, the condition is really worrisome. According to a report in Money Control, infant mortality rate (IMR) in India is seven times that of the United States and three times that of its largest neighbour China. As far as basic healthcare facilities in rural areas are concerned, almost two-thirds of the babies in India’s villages are born without help of skilled health personnel, the report said.
