Modi unanimously elected NDA Parliamentary Party Leader

Narendra Modi has been elected as Leader of the BJP and NDA Parliamentary coalition on Tuesday.

Dedicating his Government for the uplift of the poor, oppressed and deprived, the Prime Minister-elect declared that the Lok Sabha election results represent a new hope for the common man.

“I accept the responsibility you have reposed in me. You will never get an opportunity to look down on what my Government will do,” he said in a 30-minute speech after he was unanimously elected the leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party by the newly-elected Lok Sabha members and those of Rajya Sabha.

“Even though BJP got majority on its own, NDA allies will be as important as they would have been without clear majority,” said Modi.

The election took place at the Central Hall of Parliament after his name was proposed by senior leader LK Advani and seconded among others by Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Arun Jaitley and Nitin Gadkari.

The 63-year-old Prime Minister-to-be will meet President Pranab Mukherjee in the company of NDA leaders after his election as leader of the grouping which will enable the President to appoint him to the post. Modi is likely to be sworn in by the weekend.

A number of names of top BJP leaders including Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Murli Manohar Joshi and Venkaiah Naidu were doing the rounds for possible inclusion in Modi’s Cabinet.

Besides, some leaders belonging to allies like Shiv Sena, TDP, Akali Dal and LJP may also be included.

For the third successive day, a series of meetings took place in the BJP, RSS and at Gujarat Bhavan, where Modi is putting on. Vaiko, an ally of BJP in Tamil Nadu, who lost the election, also met Modi, while YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy also called on him and extended ‘issue based’ support to his Government.
