Varanasi DM Pranjal Yadav has close relation with SP’s Yadav family, charges BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a fresh charge in its battle against the local administration of Varanasi. Senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed that they had information that the District Magistrate of Varanasi Pranjal Yadav has close links with the ruling Samajwadi Party Yadav family.
In an interview to a national news channel, Prasad said that it is the Election Commission’s job to ensure free and fair election. But the EC did not take any action in what happened in Varanasi, where the District Magistrate did. He said that the DM is closely related to leadership of the Samajwadi Party.

The Samajwadi Party, though, has dismissed the BJP’s accusation. “He is not a relative and also very importantly the state government would not intervene to give any directions to any Returning Officer. We are well aware of our Constitutional responsibilities,” said SP’s Gaurav Bhatia.
Reacting to this, Prasad said, “We have also got certain information and, I repeat, about the very close relationships of the District Magistrate with the ruling family there.” BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on May 8 held a massive roadshow in Varanasi in protest against the Election Commission after one of his rallies in the city was cancelled by the district administration. The roadshow came shortly after the EC slammed the BJP for “disrespecting” the poll panel.
Varanasi comes out to fight for Modi
“We appeal to senior leaders of parties to display greater maturity when referring to the Election Commission,” Chief Election Commission VS Sampath said at a Press conference, called shortly after the BJP held a massive protest in Varanasi over the cancellation of the rally. “We are disappointed that a national party should embark on a protest against the EC,” Sampath said, making it abundantly clear that the poll panel was not “scared of anyone – any political party or entity”.

A BJP delegation earlier on May 8 met the Election Commission, lodging a complaint against the Varanasi District Magistrate for cancelling the rally. It sought that the DM be transferred. The EC, however, stood by its officer. “Competent local authorities of Varanasi, for security reasons, were unable to give permission for Modi’s public meeting in Benia Bagh. We are bound to go by professional advice from the local administration. It cannot be ignored, and the officer cannot be transferred,” Sampath told mediapersons.
