Press Statement issued by BJP National Spokesperson, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi

The clashes which occurred in Kishtwar and other areas in J&K are very disturbing and have shown that the Jammu and Kashmir Government needs to be more proactive in protective and preventive measures to secure the lives of the common people. As per reports 3 people have been killed and more than 20 injured.  Equally disturbing are reports both from people on the spot as well as news Media that the MOS Home Mr. Sajjad Kitchloo was in the area where the trouble happened and was at best a mute spectator and at worst involved in the clashes.

Two top policemen have been removed however it is unclear why Mr. Sajjad Kitchloo has also not been removed considering he is the MOS Home and allegations against him are appearing in National media. We demand that to restore confidence especially in the minority community in Kashmir, Mr. Kitchloo be removed pending an impartial inquiry on his role in the riots in Kishtwar.  Unfortunately as per latest report, the opposite seems to be happening and in fact a Mr. Bashir Ahmed Khan has been appointed as the new DC of the area, who is allegedly the nephew of a J&K Cabinet Minister and leader Mr. Taj Mohi Ud din. Therefore when there are allegations of political involvement in the clashes, another person with possible political linkage has been appointed as the DC of the troubled area.

Similarly, there is concern whether media blackout is to prevent communal incidents or to deny information which may show where the state government has erred in containing the situation and where its own ministers may be involved.

There is also no report of arrest of people who as per multiple news channels were raising anti India slogans and waving flags of Pakistan and LeT. Who are these people and what efforts are being made to find them ? Why a media blackout on this too ?

Five posts of the Indian Army in Poonch Sector have been attacked by the Pakistani simultaneously and we condemned the act of violence and see a large conspiracy to destabilize India.

Stopping the leader of Opposition of the Rajya Sabha who was going  to assess the situation is undemocratic and reminds us of 1953 when Sh. SP Mookherjee was arrested in 1953 by Shaikh Abdullah when he went to Kashmir
