BJP National General Secretary Shri P. Muralidhar Rao condemns Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh and calls on for a new policy framework for development in Naxal affected areas

Addressing press conference at Karim Nagar in Andhra Pradesh, BJP National General Secretary Shri P Muralidhar Rao has condemned the attack by Naxals on Congress top leadership in Chhattisgarh. He expressed extreme shock and grief on this audacious act by Maoists. He also expressed his condolences to the kith and kin of those who were killed including leaders Shri Mahendra Karma, Shri Nandkumar Patel, Shri Uday Mudaliar and wishes for speedy recovery of the injured including senior Congress leader Shri Vidya Charan Shukla.

Shri Rao said that these attacks should not be seen as just an attack on any political party or any particular political ideology. This should be considered as war on the state, constitution, Parliamentary democracy and the unity of the nation. Maoists have time and again repeated that they are fighting a ‘protracted war’ on the state of India, by first encircling and capturing the villages and then moving to cities and thereby capturing state power through ‘barrel of the gun.’ He also said that this should not be seen as a localized issue or a law and order problem of any particular state.

The Maoists have indulged in similar acts of violence in the past. In 2003, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Chandrababu Naidu, also a TDP leader, was attacked and critically injured by the Naxals. A similar attack was done on CPI (M) leader and then West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya in 2008. The left wing extremists may target different leaders of different political ideologies, but their objectives for such attacks are always the same.

In this hour of crisis, under the leadership of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Shri Raman Singh, the state is courageously facing a war-like situation. Bharatiya Janata Party appreciates the resolve shown by Chhattisgarh government in fighting this menace. The entire nation stands by the Chief Minister and his government.

BJP also welcomes the decision of Chhattisgarh government to constitute a judicial probe under a sitting judge to find out the real facts and reasons of this attack. The Union government has also ordered an NIA probe to find the factors leading to this incident.
Shri Muralidhar Rao said that there must have to be sustained joint efforts between state and centre to fight the Maoist insurgency. The strategy also should be comprehensive and a fully concerted approach can only create a matching situation where the state can succeed.

Shri Rao also urged the Central government to pay sufficient attention in expediting the development projects initiated in Naxal affected districts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Maharashtra etc. These development oriented projects should not get affected on account of terrorism.

In the last few years, people in rural areas are facing unprecedented hardships due to complete devastation of rural economy. Agriculture has become extremely unviable and its allied activities have been seriously affected. In such a situation, the people are feeling absolutely helpless and frustrated. This in turn prepares a fertile ground for breeding of Maoist activities.
Shri Rao demanded for a new policy framework to revive agri-based economy and to incorporate people from the unorganised sector in the development process. BJP realises this to be an imminent step in containing Maoism from flourishing and the party will put all efforts in this direction.
